Many tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs are chomping at the bit for the Internet of Things to just get here already.

For those unfamiliar with the term, the Internet of Things refers to the hoards of "smart" technologies inundating our everyday lives — smart refrigerators that can literally text you when you're out of milk, or smart thermostats that react to your home environment to produce the ideal temperature, for example.
