Rescuers respond to distress calls from migrant boats in the Mediterranean

Italian and Maltese ships are responding Monday to distress calls from migrant boats carrying an estimated 400 people in the Mediterranean, according to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi of Italy.

The Italian premier's announcement came after the International Organization for Migration said its Rome office had received a distress call from international waters about three boats that needed help.

"IOM learning of three more migrant boats in distress [in international] waters," the agency tweeted on Monday

It said the caller reported 300 people on his boat with about 20 fatalities and said the boat was sinking, according to The Associated Press, which said the caller provided no information on the other boats. Read more...
