Original lyrics for 'American Pie' could reveal the song's true meaning

What does "American Pie" mean?


It means Don McLean never has to work again, as he's fond of saying. It also famously references the tragic plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper at an unfairly young age — "the day the music died."



Beyond that, though, the sprawling 1971 classic is largely open to interpretation. It has been picked over by committees of fans, critics and musicologists keen to unlock its secrets.


Now, with the original manuscript up for sale for an expected £1 million ($1.5 million) at Christie's in New York after languishing in a box at McLean's home for 43 years, some of its lyrical conundrums may be solved. Read more...
