Homeless people are designing your next favorite T-shirt

When Matthew Wayne was eight years old, he and his family went to a San Diego art gallery showcasing work exclusively from homeless youth.


One painting in particular caught his eye — the artist's name also happened to be Matthew. And then it hit him: There was a boy out there, just like him, but who didn't have the same advantages, who didn't have a home.


Almost 15 years later, it inspired him to take action. With two fellow seniors at San Diego State University, Wayne cofounded Art Without a Roof, a social enterprise that works with disadvantaged artists to create sustainable apparel and items featuring their art.
