A California man was charged with elder abuse Tuesday after authorities said he punched a 78-year-old man who told him he had taken too many Nutella samples at Costco.
Derrick Gharabighi, a 24-year-old Burbank resident, was charged with elder abuse with the special circumstance of inflicting great bodily harm, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. If convicted, he would face a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison.
According to authorities, Gharabighi was taking a Nutella waffle sample at Costco on Sunday. The elderly man reached out to take one as well, and Gharabighi took all of them, prosecutors said.
The older man then told Gharabighi he had taken too many. Gharabighi punched him in the face, prosecutors said.
The man was taken to a hospital for treatment, and Gharabighi was arrested by Burbank police.
