Republican presidential contender Ben Carson on Tuesday cancelled all scheduled events after staffers were involved in a car crash in Iowa, his campaign said.

The three volunteers and a campaign employee were traveling in a van that hit a patch of ice, flipped on its side, and was struck by another vehicle, the Carson campaign said in a news release.

One of the volunteers has been taken to the trauma center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The three others in the van were taken to Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, to be checked out by medical staff.

"Dr. Carson has spoken with the family of the volunteer being transported to Omaha, as well as the attending physician," the campaign said. "Dr. Carson has cancelled all remaining campaign events today and will be traveling to Omaha this afternoon to be with the family during this difficult time."

The campaign called on supporters to pray for those involved in the accident.
