Shooting Erupts In Downtown Charleston, South Carolina

Police confirmed the shooting happened about 9 p.m. on Calhoun Street, but there was no official word on possible injuries.

A shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, prompted a major police response Wednesday night.

The shooting reportedly happened around 9 p.m. Two hours later, police tweeted that they were still looking for a suspect.

Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said the suspect in the shooting is a white man who is about 21 years old. Francis said the man was wearing a grey sweatshirt, possibly a hoodie, and jeans, and was clean shaven.

According to CNN, there were multiple fatalities inside Emanuel AME Church.

It was not immediately clear how many people, if any, had been injured in the shooting, though journalists at the scene reported seeing at least one person transported for medical attention.
