The source of the spill at Refugio State Beach on Tuesday, a pipeline, was secured after residents first reported smelling fumes, officials said.
Authorities were working to clean up the spill at Refugio State Beach as the Memorial Day holiday approached. Beachgoers were asked to steer clear of the area as cleanup continued.
A pipeline on the shore ruptured Tuesday, according to the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management. Responders were able to shut off the pipeline by afternoon.
According to the Santa Barbara Independent, county firefighters first responded after residents reported smelling fumes. At one point, the pipeline was leaking at a rate of about 100 barrels per minute, the Independent reported.
