Police Sergeant W. Patrick Swanton said in a news conference that eight people had been killed in the fighting, while another person died in hospital. Several other were injured in the "chaotic" scenes.

He said at least 12 police officers, as well as SWAT teams, were on the scene prior to the fighting because they anticipated violence.
