A man who attacked at least 10 people with a hammer inside a tribal office in British Columbia on Wednesday was pronounced dead at the scene, the Canadian media reported.
Ten people were taken from the office near Lillooet to a hospital, Interior Health West spokeswoman Michaela Swan told BuzzFeed News. Of that group, two were in critical condition, two people were in serious condition, and the others had non-life-threatening injuries.
Four of the injured were staffers of the Indian band, CBC reported.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the Bridge Indian Band office around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a man had assaulted several people. When they arrived, they found the man, who was not immediately identified, restrained.
As he was arrested, the man became unconscious and unresponsive, authorities said. Officers were unable to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is investigating his death.
It was the second hammer attack in Canada in as many days. On Tuesday, a 19-year-old man was killed in Quebec and two people were injured by a wielding suspect, CBC reported. A 34-year-old man was arrested by the Laval Police Department in connection with those attacks.
Bridge River Indian Band Chief Susan James said in a statement to the Vancouver Sun that she was working to support the families of those injured in the latest attack.
"Our attention now will be on the healing work we need to do," she said. "This tragedy has put our community in shock."
