An operation is underway to rescue several hundred migrants whose boat capsized on Wednesday off the coast of Libya, the Irish Navy confirmed to BuzzFeed News.

Doctors Without Borders wrote on Twitter that 700 people were on board the stricken vessel. The organization's Dignity I rescue ship was one of the first at the scene of the incident to offer assistance, with two other vessels following closely behind.

AFP reported that the Dignity I, as well as the Irish Navy vessel Le Niamh, began approaching the migrant vessel when those on board began grouping on one side of the boat, causing it to capsize.

A representative of the Save the Children Fund told BuzzFeed News that the Irish Navy is still on scene about 20 miles off the coast of Libya.

A UNICEF spokesperson reported that 16 people so far have died.
