Maj. Gen. Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak, a spokesman for the ruling military junta, said two bombs had been found on the scene, the Associated Press reported.

"It was a TNT bomb," said Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwong, according to the BBC. "The people who did it targeted foreigners and to damage tourism and the economy."

The blast took place near the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel and the popular Erawan Shrine near the busy Rachaprasong intersection in the Thai capital at around 7:00 p.m. local time (8:00 a.m. ET).

The shrine is to the Hindu goddess Brahma, but is also visited by thousands of Buddhists and tourists each day. It is located near three shopping malls in the city center's Chidlom district, the BBC reported.

Journalists and local media reported seeing a number of bodies, body parts, and injured people, as well as burnt-out motorbikes strewn across the road.
