White Supremacist Convicted Of Murder In Jewish Center Shootings

Allison Long / AP

A Kansas jury on Monday found a 74-year-old white supremacist guilty of capital murder over the shooting deaths of three people at two Jewish facilities last year.

Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., a former Ku Klux Klan leader who defended himself in court, argued that he shot the three people at a Kansas City Jewish community center and assisted living facility in April 2014 because of a Jewish conspiracy to eliminate the white race.

Allison Long / AP

"I wanted to kill Jews, not people," he told the court, according to the Associated Press.

During his closing arguments he wrote "diversity is a code word for white genocide" on a board.

The Missouri man asked jurors to show courage by finding him not guilty, arguing he was reacting to the "genocide against white people by Jews."

Jurors took less than two hours to convict Miller, according to the Kansas City Star.

He was also found guilty of attempted murder, as well as assault and weapons offenses.

"I believe the fat lady just sang," he reportedly said when the verdict was delivered.

The three shooting victims of the April 13, 2014, shooting were all Christians: 14-year-old Reat Underwood; his grandfather, William Corporon; and Terri LaManno, who was visiting her mother at the Jewish assisted living center when the gunman opened fire.

Miller now faces a potential death sentence.

Statue Of Confederate President Jefferson Davis Comes Down At The University Of Texas

Eric Gay / AP

A statue of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy during the Civil War, was removed from from its prominent location at the center of the University of Texas at Austin on Sunday, marking a success for a student-led movement that gained momentum after the shooting massacre at an historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

The statue of the Confederate leader has been displayed for decades in the most prominent open space of the campus, sitting along with other Confederate leaders, such as Albert Sidney Johnston, John H. Reagan, and Robert E. Lee.

But on Sunday morning, more than 100 people watched as the statue was wrapped in protective plastic and taken down with a forklift.

Xavier Rotnofsky, student body president of the university, told BuzzFeed News some in the crowd compared the event to the infamous toppling of the Saddam Hussein statue in Baghdad in 2003 after the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

"The feeling in the crowd was celebratory, but the feeling on campus, especially among students, is that we tackled one symbol of institutional racism, but now we need to tackle the other systemic problems," he said.

Eric Gay / AP

The statue was moved to the school's Dolph Briscoe Center for American History as part of an educational display.

"Jefferson Davis had few ties to Texas, but played a unique role in the history of the American South that is best explained and understood through an educational exhibit," Gregory L. Fenves, president of the university, said in a statement on Aug. 14.

"As a public university, it is vital that we preserve and understand our history and help our students and the public learn from it in meaningful ways," Fenves said.

The statues of the other Confederate leaders will remain in the university's Main Mall, Fenves said, because of their "deep ties to Texas."

The university, however, will consider placing a plaque in the Main Mall to provide historical context to the statues, according to the statement.

Eric Gay / AP

Student movements at the university have previously pushed to remove the Confederate statues but fallen short.

"This is decades in the making," Rotnofsky told BuzzFeed News earlier this month.

Rotnofsky was elected earlier this year partly on a campaign to renew efforts to move the Davis statue.

Efforts to do so gained momentum in June after nine people were gunned down inside a historically black church in Charleston, allegedly by a 21-year-old white man who appears to have a history of using Confederate symbols to espouse racist hate. The massacre sparked a nationwide movement to remove Confederate iconography from public grounds across the U.S.

"It led to a humongous outpouring of people's feelings about the issue," Rotnofsky said.

"Not only was he a leader of the Confederate movement, but he is in the South Mall, one of the most prominent parts of the university," Rotnofsky said. "That's why we thought it was absurd."

VICE Reporters Detained In Turkey Face Terrorism Charges

Ilyas Akengin / AFP / Getty Images

Four people working for VICE News who were detained by Turkish authorities on Thursday while covering political clashes with police are set to face terrorism charges, the media company said Sunday.

The four were detained by anti-terrorism police Thursday in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir. The journalists' rooms were searched and their camera equipment was seized by Turkish authorities after they filmed clashes between police and supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party.

Amnesty International and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had originally said that three reporters had been arrested. However, a VICE spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in a statement Sunday that four of its staff had been detained, but did not identify those arrested.

"They are due in court [on Monday] where they face unsubstantiated charges of terrorism," the spokesperson said.

"VICE News continues to work vigorously with all relevant authorities to secure the safe release of our four colleagues"

Two of the reporters were identified by Amnesty and the CPJ as Jake Hanrahan and Philip Pendlebury, British journalists who traveled to Turkey to cover the clashes. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said a third person detained was their fixer -- a journalist in the region who assists in putting reporters in contact with sources and navigating the area.

"This is yet another example of the Turkish authorities suppressing the reporting of stories that are embarrassing to them," Andrew Gardner, Amnesty International's Turkey researcher said in a statement. "They should release the journalists immediately."

View Video ›

facebook.com

The CPJ also called for the reporters to be released and allowed to continue their work reporting on the clashes.

"The renewed clashes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish separatists in the volatile southeast are of public interest to both domestic and international audiences," Nina Ognianova, CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator, said in the statement.

Three days ago, Hanrahan tweeted images from the region. His last tweet was posted Thursday.

According to police sources who spoke to Amnesty, the journalists were being detained on suspicion of assisting terrorists.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party has been classified as a terrorist organization by Turkish authorities. Journalists who have been in contact with the group while covering clashes with the government have been imprisoned or obstructed from doing their work, according to the CPJ statement.

Amnesty International asked that authorities either "demonstrate credible evidence of criminal acts" or release the reporters.

"Turkey has a dismal record of abusing anti-terror laws in order to suppress dissent, frequently targeting journalists," the Amnesty statement read.

Turkey and Kurdish militants in the region maintained a ceasefire for more than two years until July, when separatists shot and killed 18 police officers.

"It is completely proper that that journalists should cover this important story," Gardner said. "The decision to detain the journalists was wrong, while the allegation of assisting Islamic state is unsubstantiated, outrageous and bizarre."

Shane Smith, owner and founder of VICE, tweeted Saturday, calling for his employees' release:

A Transgender Man Was Married By The Kentucky Clerk Who Refuses To Perform Same-Sex Marriage

Timothy D. Easley / AP

The Kentucky county clerk who has petitioned the Supreme Court to be exempted from performing same-sex marriages due to her religious beliefs signed a marriage certificate for a transgender man and his pansexual wife earlier this year.

Rowan County Clerk Kimberly Davis ordered her staff to stop issuing any marriage licenses in the wake of June's historic Supreme Court decision in favor of nationwide marriage equality because she objects to having her name appear on the documents for religious reasons.

However, on March 2 of this year she signed a marriage certificate for Alexis and Camryn Colen, presumably unaware that Camryn is a transgender male.

"I, Kim Davis, Clerk of the County and State aforesaid, do hereby certify that the above and foregoing is a true and correct copy of the Marriage Certificate as recorded," reads a copy of the State of Kentucky marriage certificate that was signed by Davis and provided to BuzzFeed News.

Camryn Colen

Camryn told BuzzFeed News the couple chose to go public with their gender and sexual identities in order to push Davis to begin recognizing same-sex marriages.

"[Davis] needs to understand that love is love no matter who it is: gay, straight, black, or white," Camryn told BuzzFeed News. "She saw me and my wife come in as what she thought was just a straight couple that were in love and wanted to get married. Why can't others be seen like that?"

Davis with attorney Roger Gannam.

Timothy D. Easley / AP

Camryn, originally from Zanesville, Ohio, was once deployed to Iraq as part of the Texas Army National Guard. He was present at the Fort Hood base in Texas during the 2009 shooting in which a U.S. army major fatally shot 13 people and injured 30 others.

He now works as a delivery driver in Morehead, Kentucky, and is recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder, in addition to back and neck injuries sustained during training. His wife, Alexis, is a stay-at-home mom who also receives a carer's allowance to help look after Camryn.

The couple were among a group of protesters outside the clerk's office in Morehead on Saturday.

Timothy D. Easley / AP

He said that since going public the couple had received "massive amounts of support" from local LGBT couples who had been denied marriage licenses in the county.

"It was one thing to have the government say no to your marriage, but to have one person do it is something else," Camryn said.

Davis' attorney, Mat Staver, told BuzzFeed News he would not disturb his client with a request for comment over the weekend.

The First Black Man To Play Jean Valjean On Broadway Dies At 21

Kyle Jean-Baptiste, an actor who made musical theater history in July by becoming the first black man to play the Les Misérables hero Jean Valjean on Broadway, died Friday in New York City. He was 21.

kylejeanbaptiste.com

"The entire Les Misérables family is shocked and devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of Kyle, a remarkable young talent and tremendous person who made magic — and history — in his Broadway debut," the show's producers said in a statement.

"We send our deepest condolences to his family and ask that you respect their privacy in this unimaginably difficult time."

Jean-Baptiste died after falling off a fire escape at his mother's apartment, BroadwayWorld.com reported.

The young actor had served as the Broadway production's Valjean understudy, in addition to playing the roles of Courfeyrac, one of the students, and the Constable.

The graduate of Ohio's Baldwin Wallace University had been making his Broadway debut in Les Mis, when he went on as Jean Valjean in July.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the British theatrical producer behind Les Mis, even watched him perform.

His last turn as Valjean was on Thursday night.

"Acting and singing have become an extension of who I am, and I strive to use my gift to influence and inspire others," he wrote on his website. "I am now shooting for the stars and trying to reach my goal of becoming the best stage and screen actor that I can be."

Bystander Fatally Shot By NYPD Officer During Undercover Operation

Spencer Platt / Getty Images

New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has apologized to the family of a man killed Friday night by an officer involved in an undercover operation.

Authorities said the undercover officer had been participating in an illegal gun-buy in Mount Vernon, north of the Bronx, when he was robbed at gunpoint by a second suspect. After the officer attempted to stop the fleeing man, the suspect then pointed his gun at the officer, police said, prompting him to open fire.

The suspect was shot three times in the torso, according to police, but a bystander standing behind the man was also struck.

Authorities said the bystander, Felix Kumi, 61, was taken to a local hospital for a torso wound, but died early on Saturday morning.

In a statement, Commissioner Bratton expressed his "profound sorrow and sympathy" to the Mount Vernon resident's family.

"Mr. Kumi was blameless, and this tragedy has tested and tried his family," Bratton said." I pray that they may find comfort in their hope of resurrection and awakening, and I tender the Department’s support and service in their grief."

The handgun replica police said they found on the suspect.

NYPD

The unnamed suspect who allegedly aimed a weapon at the officer was taken into custody and brought to a hospital, police said, with charges pending.

Police said they recovered a handgun replica from the 37-year-old suspect.

The suspect from whom the undercover officer was allegedly buying weapons from was identified by police as 28-year-old Jeffrey Aristy.

He was arrested and charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance and firearms.

Three Children In Hospital After Austrian Police Discover A New Truckload Of Refugees

A truck containing the bodies of 71 migrants that was discovered on Thursday.

Ronald Zak / AP

Twenty-six people, thought to be refugees and migrants, were discovered in the back of a truck in the Austrian district of Braunau on Saturday, police said, just days after the bodies of 71 people were found in another truck.

In a statement, authorities said the truck's Romanian driver was arrested after a police chase, with officials discovering 26 people from Syria, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh during a subsequent search of the truck's load compartment.

Three children among those discovered were transported to hospital in "extremely poor health" suffering from severe dehydration, police said.

The truck driver, 29, has been taken into custody on suspicion of people smuggling.

The discovery came the same day four men appeared in court in Hungary on charges of aggravated people smuggling in connection with the discovery of 71 dead refugees in the back of a truck in Austria on Thursday.

The bodies of the 59 men, eight women, and four children thought to be from Syria were found in the back of the abandoned truck near a town close to the Hungarian border, police said. They are thought to have died from suffocation.

Three Bulgarians and an Afghan man arrested in Hungary were remanded in custody until Sept. 29 during a court hearing in the city of Kecskemet, the BBC reported.

Pablo Gorondi / AP

Police said the truck was registered to a Bulgarian-Lebanese man, while a Bulgarian-Hungarian was believed to have been the truck driver.

Police told Reuters they hoped to use search through data on the victims' phones to determine their identities.

Spokesman Helmut Marban said the refugees may have been dead for up to two days before their bodies were discovered.

"At first when they got in they were of course standing, but when we had to bring them out they were [entangled] altogether," he said.

The incident has served as a horrific turning point in Europe's migration crisis, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying the continent had been "shaken by the appalling news."

More than 100,000 migrants were detected at E.U. borders in the month of July, according to the bloc, with most seeking refuge from Syria and Afghanistan.

The E.U. says nearly 340,000 migrants were detected at borders between January and July, a dramatic increase from the 280,000 detected in all of 2014.

Many refugees and migrants also endure treacherous sea crossings from North Africa, which are often deadly, in order to reach European shores.

Al Jazeera Journalists Jailed Again By Egyptian Authorities

Baher Mohamed, Mohamed Fahmy, and lawyer Amal Clooney in court on Saturday.

Asmaa Waguih / Reuters

Three Al Jazeera journalists were sentenced to three years in prison by an Egyptian court on Saturday -- the second time the reporters have been convicted and imprisoned on charges of spreading false news and aiding terrorists.

In a case that has drawn widespread international condemnation, Egyptian Baher Mohamed, Canadian Mohamed Fahmy, and Australian Peter Greste were originally found guilty in June 2014 of assisting the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group in the wake of the army's 2013 ousting of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. Greste and Fahmy originally received sentences of seven years imprisonment, while Mohamed was sentenced to 10 years jail.

An appeals court ordered a retrial in January, with Greste deported to Australia in February after spending 400 days in prison.

Supporters of the trio had expected the case to be thrown out on Saturday, but Judge Hassan Farid instead convicted the journalists because they had not registered with Egypt's press syndicate.

Mohamed received an additional six months on his sentence for being in possession of a spent bullet case, Al Jazeera reported.

Fahmy and Mohamed, who were in court for the hearing, were immediately taken into custody, while Greste tweeted his shock at at being sentenced in absentia from his home in Australia.

In a statement, Al Jazeera Media Network's Acting Director General Mostefa Souag said the verdict "defies logic and common sense."

"Today's verdict is yet another deliberate attack on press freedom," he said. "It is a dark day for the Egyptian judiciary; rather than defend liberties and a free and fair media, they have compromised their independence for political reasons."

Fahmy and Mohamed sit in a courtroom cage on Saturday.

Egyptian authorities contend that the Qatar-funded news network is biased, but human rights campaigners say the journalists have been punished because of political disputes between Cairo and Doha, which supported Morsi.

Amal Clooney, the lawyer representing the journalists, told reporters outside the court the verdict sent a "very dangerous message."

"It sends a message that journalists can be locked up for simply doing their job, for telling the truth and reporting the news," she said. "And it sends a dangerous message that there are judges in Egypt who will allow their courts to become instruments of political repression and propaganda.”

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who had pressed the Egyptian authorities to release Greste, said she was "dismayed" by the "distressing" sentence.

"I have spoken with Mr. Greste today and reaffirmed that I will continue to pursue all diplomatic avenues with my Egyptian counterpart to clear his name," she said in a statement.

The Canadian government also condemned the sentence and called for the release of Fahmy, who is a dual Egyptian citizen.

"This decision severely undermines confidence in the rule of law in Egypt," Minister of State Lynne Yelich said.

Yelich said Canadian officials would continue to raise the case with Egypt's government at the highest level .

Amnesty International said the convictions were an "affront to justice."

"This is a farcical verdict which strikes at the heart of freedom of expression in Egypt," Philip Luther, the Amnesty International director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement.

While stocks barely budged overall in the last five trading days, it was the most volatile week in the markets in recent memory.

Virginia Teen Jailed For 11 Years For Supporting ISIS On Twitter

A video released by ISIS in September 2014.

Handout . / Reuters

A Virginia teenager was jailed Friday for more than 11 years after pleading guilty to supporting ISIS on social media and assisting another teenager to travel to Syria to join the terrorist group, officials announced.

Manassas resident Ali Shukri Amin, 17, was sentenced by a federal court judge to 136 months in prison after pleading guilty in June to using Twitter to provide encouragement to ISIS supporters, as well as advice on how to use the digital currency Bitcoin to mask their funds.

Amin also admitted to helping an 18-year-old, Reza Niknejad, travel to Syria to take up arms with the militants. Niknejad was charged in absentia in June with terrorist offenses.

“Today’s sentencing demonstrates that those who use social media as a tool to provide support and resources to ISIL will be identified and prosecuted with no less vigilance than those who travel to take up arms with ISIL,” U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente said in a statement, using an alternative acronym for ISIS.

ISIS has made sophisticated use of social media to spread news of its attacks and executions, as well as recruit potential fighters. Federal officials have made concentrated efforts to counter the online radicalization by ISIS, with Department of Justice officials describing Friday's sentence as an example of its efforts to quash a main source of recruitment for the group.

“Amin’s case serves as a reminder of how persistent and pervasive online radicalization has become," said Andrew G. McCabe, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington, D.C., field office.

Upon his release from prison, Amin will spend the rest of his life under supervision and his internet use will be monitored.

Former Vatican Archbishop Accused Of Having Sex With Children Dies Before Trial

Reuters

Jozef Wesolowski, a former archbishop and Vatican envoy to the Dominican Republic, died Friday – before he could face trial on child sex offenses.

Wesolowski was found dead of "natural causes" in Vatican City residence, the Church said in a statement. An autopsy was scheduled.

The 67-year-old would have been the first high-ranking Vatican official to stand trial at a special tribunal convened by Pope Francis to prosecute Church members accused of sex offenses against minors after a series of international scandals that have rocked the Church in recent years. He was facing a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

After being recalled to Rome in 2013, Wesolowski the Pontiff defrocked him as an archbishop because of allegations he had preyed upon boys while in the Dominican Republic.

He allegedly paid poor young boys in the capital Santo Domingo to masturbate and perform oral sex on him. He was also accused of accessing child pornography.

His trial, which began in July, was adjourned the same day it began after Wesolowski fell ill and was admitted to hospital, the New York Times reported.

On Wednesday, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) criticized the Church for allowing Wesolowski to "walk free" in Vatican City.

"We challenge Pope Francis to immediately put Wesolowski behind bars and prove that he has done so," SNAP said.

Virginia Station WDBJ Remembers Slain Journalists With Special Broadcast

Just hours after their two colleagues were gunned down during a live television broadcast, the staff of Virginia station WDBJ remembered Alison Parker and Adam Ward as lively, hard-working professionals during a special broadcast on Wednesday night.

Parker and Ward were shot dead hours ealier while reporting for WDBJ's morning news program in Moneta, Virginia. Vicki Gardner, who was being interviewed by the news team, also sustained gunshot wounds and was listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Authorities say the shooter, former WDBJ reporter Vester Lee Flanagan, committed suicide after the deadly attack.

In an evening news on Wednesday that balanced remembrances of their slain peers with the latest information on the shooting, WDBJ staff reflected on the "devastation, sadness, and tears."

"An unimaginable day at WDBJ," anchor Jean Jadhon told viewers at the start of the broadcast. "Tonight, we want to honor their memories."

WDBJ / Via wdbj7.com

"All day people have been teary," Jeff Marks, the station's general manager, told viewers. "They've been hugging, but they've also been doing their jobs as journalists."

"I'm just amazed at the attitude of the folks here that they have an obligation to the public to get the news on and out right, and they're doing it," he added.

News Director Kelly Zuber said Parker and Ward were "the A team" and had been cut down at the beginning of their lives.

Colleagues remembered Ward as an extremely polite man with a passion for sports, including the various teams of Virginia Tech, his alma mater.

Reporter Danielle Staub said that Parker, a Roanoke native, was beloved by many viewers.

"The community was so excited to see one of their own on their hometown news station," Staub said. "I hope I can make her proud."

"They were the heart of our news team and they can never be replaced," she added.

News anchors said WDBJ would be establishing scholarships in memory of the pair.

Highlighting the global interest in the story, Marks reflected on the "brotherhood" of reporters around the world, noting how he had done interviews with news stations as far as Russia and Australia regarding the shooting.

Many of those speaking on air also took time to thank well-wishers for the outpouring of support.

Each time the broadcast cut to a commercial break, photos of Parker and Ward flashed silently on screen in front of a graphic of a flickering candle.

Here's What We Know About The Virginia Shooting Suspect

The man authorities said fatally shot Virginia reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward live during a morning broadcast Wednesday is a former television reporter for the same station, WDBJ, officials said.

The Augusta County Sheriff's Department confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the shooting suspect's legal name is Vester Lee Flanagan II.

Flanagan, 41, who also used the name Bryce Williams, was employed at WDBJ between 2012 and 2013 as a multimedia journalist, the station's general manager said on Wednesday.

"Vester was an unhappy man. We employed him as a reporter and he had some talent in that respect and some experience," the general manager said. "He quickly gathered a reputation of someone who was difficult to work with. He was sort of looking out to people to say things he could take offense to. Eventually, after many incidents of his anger, we dismissed him. He did not take that well. We had to call police to escort him from the building."

On Wednesday, after Parker and Ward's deaths, Twitter and Facebook accounts under the name Bryce Williams shared graphic video of the shooting filmed from the perspective of the gunman. His former WDBJ colleagues said on air that Bryce Williams was the name he used on television.

According to Williams' Facebook account, he lived in Roanoke, where the shooting took place. His Facebook and Twitter accounts were later suspended.

ABC News reported that between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning it had received 23 pages via fax from a man claiming to be Bryce Williams. ABC said it had turned the document over to authorities.

Flanagan was born in 1973 in Oakland, California, where his mother worked as a teacher for more than 37 years, according to her 2008 obituary.

His LinkedIn account states that he began his career as a news intern in 1993, before working as a reporter and production assistant at various stations in the 1990s.

Between March 1999 and March 200, he worked at WTWC-TV NBC 40 in Tallahassee, Florida.

In March of 2000, Flanagan filed a civil lawsuit in federal court against WTWC-TV for alleged racial discrimination. In the complaint, Flanagan said members of the station’s management called him “monkey,” suggested he had only been hired because of affirmative action, and asked him to “stop talking ebonics.” The lawsuit was settled in Jan. 2001 under unspecified terms.

Flanagan also said the station fired him after he threatened to contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to complain about the alleged discrimination, and asked for $15,000 in damages. The station's general manager said an EEOC complaint was filed.

A spokesperson with the EEOC told BuzzFeed News the office could not confirm or deny that Flanagan had ever filed a report, due to Title VII confidentiality provisions.

Moments after the shooting, Flanagan tweeted from an account under Bryce Williams that “Alison [Parker] made racist comments” and that he had filed a report with the EEOC."

WTWC-TV did not immediately return a request for comment from BuzzFeed News.
